So it’s been about five minutes since Rihanna’s first collaboration with River Island came out so of course, we must prepare ourselves for another one almost immediately. The first collection didn’t get a great run from the critics; a lot of them said the line was aimed at way too small of a demographic, others said it was just too slutty. Check out my review here!

Credit: http://www.blogcdn.com

Credit: http://www.gotceleb.com

Credit: http://www.nymag.com

This new collection, revealed in a new behind-the-scenes video, is due in stores on May 25 and again Ri-Ri collaborated with Adam Selman who designed the collection under the A-list star.

Credit: http://www.xoxoglam.com

The summer 2013 range created the range with her ‘crew’ in mind, saying, “I made a piece for everybody in my crew, we all have different body types and different tastes,” she says. “Some are braver than others, but you know, I think like that because that’s how all the women in the world are. We’re all different, we all like different things, we all have different occasions, different moods, different body types.”

Credit: http://www.vogue.co.uk

This collection is clearly a change from her first one, in both colour and shape. There are lighter colours and the prints and shapes are looser and prettier. There are jumpers and t-shirts with her portrait on, shot by her best friend Melissa who takes all of those ridiculous raunchy Instagram pictures. There is tie-dye, floral prints and some ‘sexy cotton pieces’ that Rihanna says she’ll live in…so we all know none of us will be able to wear them!

Rihanna, real name Robyn Fenty, began designing when she wanted to see clothes that she could wear on a rack, not clothes that she wanted to alter to make shorter or longer or have a little more sex appeal. Jourdan Dunn, one of the world’s hottest new British supermodels, will once again be starring in her ad campaign.

Credit: http://www.vogue.co.uk

I hope that Rihanna’s new collection will have a better response than her last one, but what Ri-Ri forgets, is that we are not all 15-year-old girls who want neon clothing with thigh high slits. Fingers crossed I’ll be able to buy a piece next time!

The celebrities were out in drones last night to celebrate the start of fashion season at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Costume Institute Gala is always the most stunning event of the season and this year was no different. As usual there were some fantastic dresses, some horrendous creations and everything in between. The 2013 theme ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’ gave the A-list the chance to spread their style wings and come up with something a little different. Therefore, I’ve decided to compile my thoughts on the best and worst dresses of the night. Let me know your thoughts and opinions too!

THE BEST:

Credit: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

I don’t think anyone else could pull this off but Gwen Stefani manages to look absolutely fabulous in a Maison Martin Margiela gown and Fred Leighton jewels on the red carpet. Many didn’t like this as the punk theme was Stefani’s time to shine but in my opinion, Gwen looks beautiful! Gavin Rossdale scrubs up nicely in his tartan suit too!

Credit: http://www.gossiprocks.com

Emma Watson looks like an absolute babe in a Prabal Gurung cut out gown. This type of gown was popular on the night but the Perks of Being a Wallflower star looked edgy and chic while still giving it that touch of class! Those shoes really give it the finishing touch!

Credit: http://www.celebuzz.com

Although Jennifer Lawrence played it safe with yet another Dior dress, I still think this is one of her best looks and love the fine details on the dress. Lawrence paid attention to detail with this outfit, with spiky shoes and the headpiece giving the outfit that little punk edge it needed.

Credit: http://www.justjared.com

Blake Lively managed to stun everyone in her two-tone Gucci dress. This girl seems to never get it wrong. The only thing missing from this ensemble is her new man candy husband Ryan Reynolds!

Credit: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

As one of the few celebrities that really embraced the punk theme, white hair has never looked so good on anyone as it does on Nicole Richie! Wearing a Topshop white gown, she let her hair and make-up do the talking and created a funky but chic outfit.

Credit: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

Sienna Miller was another celebrity who kept the theme in mind and stole the show in a simple white Burberry gown, covered by a very heavily studded leather jacket and headband. The outfit was risky for an event like this but she really pulled it off, showing that Brit girls are a step ahead when it comes to punk!

Credit: http://www.justjared.com

To all the ‘Hatha-haters’ out there, this look will stop you in your tracks! Although I’m a fan of Anne Hathaway, I’m not always a fan of her style choices. However, this Valentino dress shows a new racy side to her and the bleach blonde hair is fantastic, giving her a real edge in the style stakes!

Credit: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com

Nina Dobrev looks phenomenal in a custom-made sheer Monique Lhuillier gown with a difference! It fits her like a glove and the trousers under the gown is inspired without looking like a bad 90s outfit!

Credit: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com

I always love Rita Ora’s style, no matter how out there it is but she excels in this Thakoon number! The white with gold is elegant but the cut gives it a little bit of edge. Teamed with her trademark red lips, this ensemble is one to remember!

Credit: http://www.glamour.com

Saving the best till last (in my opinion) and another stunning gown from Thakoon. New supermodel on the block Cara Delevingne is everywhere at the moment and she proved that she is truly the belle of the punk ball in this studded number. Not only does it scream punk but its elegant and a true winner in the style stakes!

THE WORST:

There are way too many of these to count. Some people just didn’t get the theme, others just dressed in the dark! In any case, these are my opinions on the worst outfits of the night

Credit: http://www.justjared.com

I don’t know why, and I’ve tried really hard to, but I can’t like this dress! I don’t know if the Anthony Vacarello number would look better on someone else or not but I can’t get on board with it! Sorry Gisele!

Credit: http://www.gossiprocks.com

Religious imagery is best left out of these things in my opinion and it certainly doesn’t belong on a dress for the Met Ball. I don’t know what kind of punk Katy Perry was trying to portray but I think this Dolce & Gabbana dress made her look frumpy and ridiculous and don’t get me started on the crown!

Credit: http://www.theybf.com

I know she is the honorary chair for this year’s Costume Institute Gala committee but I really can’t stand this Givenchy dress. Elements of it are…ok, but altogether I just see a big mess of colours, cuts and patterns. It may have been salvaged if those gloves hadn’t gotten involved but although they match, they add to the madness that is this outfit!

Credit: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

With a Giles Deacon dress, Philip Treacy headpiece and Louis Vuitton boots, there is just WAAAY too much going on in this outfit. Separately, these pieces probably would have worked to adhere to the punk theme but together, they really hurt my eyes. Sarah Jessica Parker is a real style icon in her own right but this look doesn’t work for me!

Credit: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

With all the stories of an imminent breakdown in the Hollywood rumour mill, Miley Cyrus doesn’t help herself when she goes out looking like this! This Marc Jacobs fish net dress does nothing for her and the spiky hair is less punk and more insane asylum!

Credit: http://www.rollingout.com

Apparently Kanye was ‘embarrassed’ by Kim’s ensemble, and while he has no right telling her what to wear, I can kinda see why. This Givenchy dress is way too busy for someone with a baby bump and as Kim’s maternity style has been a bit hit and miss, she could have stunned us with a fab outfit. However that wasn’t the case and we’re left grimacing at this awkward style choice!

Credit: http://www.justjared.com

Ok, so I’ll start by saying that I love this Stella McCartney jumpsuit in theory. In practice, and on Kristen Stewart, not so much! The lines are lovely and this is a gorgeous colour, especially on Kristen. However the boxy shape around the hips and thighs make her look like a very fashionable hexagon and it just doesn’t work for me! Sorry Kristen!

Credit: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

I adore Coco Rocha but her Met Ball choice have been questionable the last two years. The pink and yellow suit/hair thing she was trying to do last year just didn’t work, and this Ungaro outfit is no better. The gold leaf design mixed with leopard skin is disastrous and the ankle boots make it ten times worse!

Credit: madonnaciccone.tumblr.com

It would take Madonna to ruin a theme and ruin it, she did! Forget the fact that she is way too old to be dressing like this anyway, she took punk way too literally and I imagine Lourdes will be hiding with the shame until next year after seeing this picture! Someone needs to tell Madonna not to go next year!

So these are my opinions on the best and worst dress at the Met Ball in New York last night. There were far more that I both liked and disliked but these were the clear winners and losers for me. Plus, you don’t want me going on anymore! Let me know what your thoughts are on the Costume Institute Gala style!

Keep styling, Em x

So its the Met Ball Costume Institute Gala tonight in New York tonight and everyone who is anyone is going to be there! In the last number of years, fashion enthusiasts have been watching as the most stylish celebrities in the world gather for one spectacular event. I’ll be posting about my favourite dresses and the horrors that some celebrities will inevitably wear, just like I did last year (see here).

But of course, before the event starts, there will always be a bit of drama and this year, its courtesy of the editor of American Vogue. Anna Wintour has banned a naked sculpture of Vivienne Westwood that was to be displayed at the Met Ball in New York tonight.

Credit: http://www.complex.com

The 40-foot statue of punk designer Westwood made from Styrofoam and laying across an old mattress, was supposed to take prime position at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute but Wintour made the snap decision a couple of weeks ago to cancel the installation.

The glittering fashion ball extravaganza launches the annual fashion exhibition at the famous museum and hosts the biggest stars on the planet. Beyoncé has been named as the honorary chair of this year’s Costume Institute Gala, alongside Anna Wintour herself and designers like Riccardo Tisci, who is in the news, having designed costumes for a ballet production at the Opéra de Paris. Mrs Carter née Knowles had one of the standout dresses last year wearing a sheer Givenchy dress designed by Tisci.

Credit: http://www.mouthtoears.com

Credit: http://www.robynhobson.com

This year’s event is dubbed Punk: Chaos to Couture and a nod to the original punk designer 72-year-old Vivienne Westwood was the obvious choice. However, the infamous editor of American Vogue took offence to the sculpture that was going to have graffiti projections on it and has cancelled its installation, calling it a needless distraction. The demanding businesswoman that is dubbed ‘Nuclear Wintour’, I assume because of the fear she induces in people, made the quick decision to get rid of Westwood’s sculpture.

There has never been evidence of a public feud between Vivienne Westwood and Anna Wintour – but many are speculating after this rash decision to cut her piece from the exhibition. Ms Wintour has never been seen in the front row of any of Westwood’s shows at London Fashion Week and has never attended one of her shows even though she makes the pilgrimage to London town to see other shows by British designers. Wintour, the undeniable Queen of Fashion, favours sharp tailoring and clean lines from designers such as Victoria Beckham.

As someone with the most sensitive skin in the world, it’s really important for me to look after my skin. I was one of those very very unlucky people who were born with combination skin, that delightful mixture of oily and dry skin and I only have to look at junk food for it to flare up on my face! Also I have to exfoliate my skin every day or it will literally fall off…lovely, huh? I try not to wear make-up to college or when it’s not necessary but I do love wearing it and so I decided to write a little blog post about my favourite pieces of make-up and skin care tips, especially for people who suffer with the same temperamental skin as I do!

Skincare: I have to do a full skin care routine before I put any make-up on or my skin looks like something out of a horror film. I try to drink water a lot but I really can’t stand it, so I’ve begun to drink cold water flavoured with lemon and a hot water with lemon every night. if you can’t get your hands on fresh lemon, lemon juice will do but fresh always tastes nicer! I know it sounds cliché as well but exercise really does help! As my thesis was handed in only recently and I’m finishing up all my assignments, exercise has really been put on the back burner. However, I’ll be joining the gym this weekend when I finally move to Galway to try to feel more comfortable in my body and skin (full gym report to follow!). So yeah, exercise, water and of course, a good diet. However, don’t let anyone tell you, you can’t have your little treats, a diet can fail so so quickly when you cut out everything you love so make sure you spoil yourself every once in a while! I eat salads almost every day but I won’t deny myself chocolate when I really need it!

I start by using Clean and Clear Morning Burst Skin Brightening Facial Scrub. It smells A-MAZING and leaves my skin feeling bright, fresh and smelling good as well as unclogging my pores and getting rid of all the dead skin cells that cling to my face. Its cheap enough compared to other scrubs and lasts for a while. The main advantage of this scrub is that it doesn’t drag on and inflame sensitive skin, which is a must for me!

I then follow by doing a cleansing, toning and moisturising routine. As a ‘poor’ student, I try to keep it as economical as possible while still buying something that will be good for my face! I start by using Garnier Skin Natural Soft Essentials Cleansing Milk in Rose and then use the corresponding Skin Natural Soft Essentials Toner, both made for dry and sensitive skin. The rose extract smells amazing and they’re only €3.89 each in Tesco. I’d recommend these to anyone with sensitive skin and using them with proper cotton wool keeps your skin incredibly soft!

After that I use Nivea Soft Moisturising Cream. A big tub of it is €5.95 in the supermarket and it leaves your skin feeling amazingly soft. If you have oilier skin, I might recommend seeing what else there is out there but as my skin is more dry than oily, I swear by it! I finish up by dabbing Germoline antiseptic cream on any blemishes that I have. Its less oily than the popular Irish counterpart Savlon and dries any blemishes you have quickly and efficiently. This is only €2.45 for a big tube and lasts a seriously long time. Tips like not touching your face too much and keeping your skin hydrated is the best way to keep your skin looking clear and refreshed!

For my body, I use Soap & Glory ‘The Righteous Butter‘. I absolutely love Soap & Glory products and although they’re a little bit on the pricey side, this cleared up my dry skin so so much from the first use. Plus the packaging is absolutely lovely!

Make-up: Onto the make-up and I have way too many products! I absolutely adore Benefit and MAC and try to hit the Benefit counter whenever I get to the UK and I have money! I went over to Glasgow last weekend and bought myself some new bits and just love them. I also love trying new products and love when a Benefit set has all new products that I have tried yet. I bought ‘Primping With the Stars’ last week and I’m delighted I’ve never tried any of the products! It was extra special as I think the Benefit team may have put it out by accident as it’s not for general release for another two weeks and is exclusively available at Boots.com…I won’t complain though! I can’t wait to try it!

Foundation/Base: Before foundation, I use a number of Benefit products. I use Boi-ing concealer in No1 to cover any blemishes I have on my face and then put Erase Paste in Medium to get rid of those pesky little bags under my eyes that are more like shopping trolleys at the moment! After this I put on ‘That Gal‘ as a primer to cool my red cheeks and create an even skin tone! I got the ‘That Gal’ and ‘Erase Paste’ in a set I bought a couple of years ago called ‘Confessions of a Concealaholic‘ which was so fantastic and lasted so long!

Then I use my MAC foundation. I’m also the palest person in the world and have to have the lightest foundation in the shop which makes me look like a ghost in photos. This also means I can’t really use tan or bronzer but we all have crosses to bear and all that! My foundation is Studio Sculpt SPF 15 Foundation in NC15, the lightest foundation MAC do. I really should shop around for another one, but I have this one tried and tested and its very difficult for me to find another foundation so pale! This also covers me and as long as I have my skin prepped, it won’t make my skin look horrendous! One thing I don’t like is that the staying power isn’t great but if I’m heading out for the night, a little bit of hairspray does the trick (so bad for your skin though, i don’t advise it)!

On top of this, I like to have a powder that will give it a bit of staying power and recently discovered 17 Miracle Matte Pressed Powder in Natural Fair. This gets rid of any oily skin I have and creates a matte finish which makes your skin soft and natural looking!

Eyes: I’ve always thought my eyes are my best feature and they say you should flaunt your best feature…at least that’s my way of justifying the money I spend on eye make-up! Before this year I always did a smokey eye with MAC Carbon Matte eyeshadow and absolutely loved it, although I find you had to put a lot of layers on sometimes. However this year, my boyfriend bought me the Urban Decay Naked2 palette and I am in love! I follow a lot of eye make-up tutorials online and love using the palette to create different looks. Also the black eyeshadow is perfect for a long-lasting look, but be warned it smudges!

For definition, I use ‘Soap & Glory Smoulder Kohl’ in Superblack and love it. I usually layer it on over the Urban Decay just to give it a bit more of a kick and adds proper definition. I use Benefit ‘Bad Gal’ mascara on top to create a natural but bold look for my eyelashes and I define my eyebrows with my new Benefit ‘Instant Brow Pencil’ in Deep. I’m not a huge fan of the scouse brow or anything but I like to make sure my eyebrows look well-defined to create a good shape on my face.

Lips: I love bright lipstick and have quite a collection of bright lipsticks in red, orange and pink. I bought the MAC Archie Comics Limited Edition lipstick in Ronnie Red last week and absolutely love it. I like Rimmel lipsticks especially the Lasting Finish by Kate No. 110 and the Lasting Finish in Alarm but I find Rimmel lipsticks can get bitty and flakey very quickly and wipes off quickly. I also love the Limited Edition Sail La Vie lipstick that MAC did last summer and I’m dreading finishing the stick because its been discontinued!

Highlighter: To finish it all off I use Benefit ‘High Beam‘ under my cheekbones and ‘Watt’s Up‘ over my cheekbones, under my eyes and under my eyebrows to create a nice finish on my skin!

I hope this has helped and you find some make-up products that you like! I love all these products because they really help my sensitive skin and help me create a range of make-up looks I love! If you’ve any questions or want any advice or tips about the products I use, drop me an email and I’d love to help!

Keep styling, Em x

THE FASHION industry is that intersection where the subtle meets the extreme and the innovative meets the downright crazy. Each season, designers have to come up with new ways to stay on top of the game, making their collections and catwalk shows as theatrical as possible, ensuring their show sticks in your mind. But when does the crazy become too crazy?

There has been uproar in the fashion industry the last six months over the infamous brand Yves Saint Laurent. A fashion house that has been at the forefront of the industry, YSL was taken over by a new creative director last year called Hedi Slimane to shake things up, and by god he did. When taking over a company that is so established, it is usually a risk changing anything but Slimane went one step further and changed the brand name to Saint Laurent, a move that had many critics speechless.

Credit: http://www.tumblr.com

Since his time in the newly named Saint Laurent, Slimane has pushed the boat out on a number of projects. For the new menswear line, he chose a very unlikely candidate to front the campaign – Marilyn Manson. As part of the latest series of ads being debuted this month – titled the Music Project – Manson and other musicians such as Courtney Love will be featured in a move that is set to ‘cement the ties with the music industry’. But why?

Credit: http://www.thefader.com

Credit: http://www.nsmbl.com

Credit: http://www.apparatusmag.com

The fashion industry loves a challenge. It loves having something to analyse and ponder about. But did Slimane push it a bit too far? With only a year in charge of one of the biggest fashion houses on the planet, he has altered everything he can about its original form, including its name. When John Galliano took the helm at Christian Dior all those years ago, he made it his own but he still stayed respectful and truthful to its original designer, who made the line as successful as it was. So why can’t Slimane do this?

Of course, he is not the first designer to try the shock factor to get the critics talking. Back in 2012, Tom Ford edited an issue of Vogue Paris and used young girls in his Cadeaux editorial, including 10-year-old Thylane Blondeau. Many were up in arms about the way these young girls were posing and the make-up and clothing they had on. This led to a huge controversy about the use of young models and led in part to the setting up of the Vogue Health Initiative.

Credit: http://www.theurbansilhouette.com

In a piece entitled, “Why Tom Ford was right to photograph vamped up six-year-olds,” Libby Banks of MyDaily UK wrote: “Ford has created a dialogue about the fashion industry’s attitude to age; in an industry where teenage models are encouraged to have the physique of a small child in order to promote women’s clothing, surely the next ‘logical’ step is to use a small child to model grownup fashion. It’s meant to be absurd and offensive.”

It appears that the fashion industry has bowed down to this shock factor need. No collection or show is enough without the prospect of it blowing you out of your seat and that means a bleak future for some in the industry. It will be interesting to see how critics react when the Music Project is unveiled later this month and for Slimane’s sake, hope it doesn’t go down like a lead balloon!

So it seems that you guys loved Olivia’s guest blog that I posted a couple of weeks ago (see here) so she’s back with another blog, full with tips on how to find the right dress for your shape. This is a subject that both Olivia and myself are very passionate about, dressing your best to suit your figure and we both hope you enjoy this guest post as much as I did!

How To Find The Right Dress For Your Shape

If you’re anything like me, dress shopping can be an absolute nightmare. It’s not just about finding the right dress to fit your broad shoulders and back but small chest; or a dress that doesn’t swamp your short frame but it long enough to look elegant and grown-up. Nope, it’s about finding a dress that fits the whole package. You want a dress that makes you look and feel sensational and you shouldn’t settle for anything less. Finding the right dress is less about the colour and more about the fit. Rather than focusing on the size on the label, you should pay attention to how you feel. Here’s how to find the right dress for your shape.

Pear

Pear-shaped ladies have a small top half and a bigger bottom half so they tend to have fairly wide hips and bums. The good news for you if you’re a pear shape is that many styles of dresses suit you. The type that most flatters your assets is a prom style dress.

Look out for dresses that are fitted on top and then flare out from the waist. This will emphasise your tiny waist but also cover up wider areas. Pear-shaped ladies usually have small frames up top which means that you can work a strapless dress, a halterneck, or even a high neck dress. Try to avoid v-shaped necklines though as they will make you look even smaller up top which could unbalance your body’s proportions.

Credit: http://www.celebrityfashionista.com

Hourglass

The hourglass shape is the classic womanly figure – think Marilyn Monroe for this one. Opt for a bodycon dress to really accentuate all of your womanly curves. The great thing about bodycon is that it’s made from stretchy material so it will cling to your form and emphasis your small waist and curvaceous figure. If you’re bigger on the chest area, opt for a v-shaped neckline, whilst ladies with a smaller chest can choose high-neck and round-shaped necklines.

Credit: http://www.lovingyou.com/

Wrap dresses also look great on you as they pull you in around the waist where your body is the narrowest. Choose an on-trend midi wrap dress for a look that’s the height of fashion this season. Floral prints are great for adding feminine touches.

Slender

If you have few curves and are slim, you’re the slender body type. This body shape is great for wearing dresses. You can choose dresses made from flimsy material or figure hugging dresses. Try to keep your dress high necked and cinched in at the waist to showcase what curves you have.

You can add curves with a wide and bright waist belt. Try to veer away from v-shaped necklines and instead go for a girly heart-shaped neckline to really flatter your dainty figure.

Credit: http://www.idodresses.com

Petite

Petite ladies may find it difficult to choose a dress that doesn’t swamp their small frame. If you’re petite, a great option for you is a short dress. Whilst this may be a daring look for those with long legs, your shorter frame will mean that the hemline falls at a respectable length that is enough above the knees to look sassy, but long enough to look respectable.

Avoid baggy styles as they will make you look shorter and instead opt for figure hugging dresses. You could try a dress with a dipped hemline (that’s shorter at the front and long at the back) for a classy evening do as this will help your legs to look longer. Remember to wear heels to elongate your legs and look for dresses in the petite section of the store as they will fall in the right places on your body.

Credit: http://www.msn.com

So, if you’ve been living under a rock for the past three months, you’ve probably escaped the news that Beyoncé is doing another world tour. That O2 ad with the awful song has been plaguing our televisions for way too long now and its only about to get worse when she starts on the Mrs Carter world tour this week!

Credit: http://www.eonline.com

What we can love in the video is the fantastic theatrical outfit Beyoncé has on in the video, very Marie Antoinette and Parisian! Long gone are the days when we had our favourite acts prancing around on stage wearing hideous cheap outfits like PVC or pastel matching numbers (see everything Steps wore…ahh the 90s!).

It has been revealed this week that the designers behind this fabulous look are none other than DSquared2 – lucky lady! Twins Dean and Dan Caten, the geniuses behind the Italian brand are custom-making an outfit for Jay-Z’s better half for he upcoming world tour. They aren’t revealing anything about the outfit yet but a spokesperson has said that the outfit will be a ‘show-stopper’ and will be in line with their Spring/Summer 2013 collection, very reminiscent of 90s supermodels.

Credit: http://www.perezhilton.com

The spokesperson said, “Beyoncé chooses to wear a unique outfit created exclusively for her by Dean and Dan Caten, inspired by an item from the 2013 spring/summer Glamazon catwalk show”.

DSquared2 are known for their spectacular catwalk shows in the past – with recreations of festival grounds, a high-school dance and an underground rave – the perfect scene for their amazing collections.

Beyoncé collaborating with DSquared2 is a shrewd move for both parties, one being the biggest global superstar in the world right now and the other, an innovative design team that fly just under the radar enough to be extra-desirable. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing how this partnership turns out and to get a glimpse of this ‘show-stopping’ number.

The Mrs Carter tour begins in Belgrade, Serbia on April 15 and finishes on August 5 in Brooklyn, her husband’s hometown.

I got an email from Olivia, a fan of Emily Fashion Fiend yesterday who is an aspiring writer, so of course I’ve given her the opportunity to write a guest blog post on a fashion topic she enjoys. I’ve been in the position of looking for the chance to write on websites before and its always brilliant and really refreshing to see young women who want to write and be able to help out! Anyone who is looking to write and has a flair for fashion writing is always welcome to give me a shout at Emily Fashion Fiend and show off the skills they have!

How to Make Your Dress Look Good Without Alterations

Finding a dress that fits perfectly is the holy grail of fashionistas everywhere – but there’s nothing more frustrating than finding a dress that looks beautiful on the rack only to later find that it just doesn’t fit you properly. You might think that alterations will do the trick, but there actually might not be any need to go that far. There are various ways you can tweak and manipulate your dress so that it flatters your figure and leaves you looking ultra-stylish. Here are a few suggestions you might want to bear in mind if you’ve got a dress and you’re just not happy with the way it looks on you.

The first thing you should do is ensure that you know exactly what your measurements are. It’s a good idea to do this before you start buying dresses for yourself, of course, but if you’ve already done that then you might as well have yourself fitted up anyway. Get a friend to measure your bust size, waist and hips. It’s a good idea to look at a few different designers’ charts to help you get a better idea of what your dress size actually is. If you find it’s rather smaller than your measurements, then you might want to go back to the shop and try on a few other sizes until you find one that’s better suited to you.

Credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bradhoc/7343762168/

If your dress is too small, then there are a number of fixes you can try. It might be a good idea for you to purchase some shape wear to help tuck in some of those parts of your body – specifically your bust, thighs and tummy – which might be causing a problem. You might want to try wearing a bra with minimal padding in order to fit your bust into the dress. If you find you can’t zip the dress all the way up but otherwise it still looks okay, then you might want to add a matching cropped cover up over your shoulders to disguise this.

If your dress is too large, you can use accessories to give the impression that it does fit. Adding a matching belt around the waist can give a form-fitting appearance, while a thin, delicate belt can give a more delicate appearance. If you find the straps of your dress are too long, you can try folding them over and using a safety pin to hold the excess length underneath the dress fabric. This will most likely be pretty difficult to notice if you do this around the back of the dress.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/verypurpleperson/3364381793/

If your dress almost fits you but falls short in some areas, there are a number of things you can do. A padded bra or padded inserts can help to fill out a loose top in order to create a better fit. If your dress is a little too long, then you could always wear heels. If the sleeves of your dress are too large, just shorten them by pinning them back.

She has a keen interest in all things fashion. She enjoys connecting with bloggers to see how they’re mixing up current trends, and also to get some style inspiration. So lets have a look at what Bonessi Ballerinas has to offer in their stunning first collection!

FOR SUCH a small island, we really have a plethora of talent in the design industry across the world. In a country that has no fashion week, no internationally recognised fashion magazines and models that adhere to photo-call modelling rather than high fashion and runway, it’s hard to imagine that such amazing talent could be present on the international stag. However, some of the biggest names in the design world are indeed Irish so here we will have a look at the four biggest names in Irish and international design!

Philip Treacy – Hailing from Galway, this designer is a firm favourite with everyone from royalty to A-list celebrities. He has designed hats for various Harry Potter films and Sarah Jessica Parker’s hat for the ‘Sex and the City’ movie premiere. His name was hugely publicised when thirty-six of his designs were worn at the Royal Wedding including Princess Beatrice’s one, which was widely spoken about in the media. He is also a firm favourite of Lady GaGa and designed her space-inspired hat for the Grammy Awards in 2010.

Orla Kiely – Based in London, Kiely began her career in the National College of Art and Design before enrolling at the Royal College of Art (RCA) to do her masters degree. For her exit show at the RCA, she showed her hat collection, which was bought by Harrods but soon changed to handbag design on advice from her father. Described as the ‘Queen of Prints’ by the Guardian, her petal and stem design is instantly recognisable and her designs have been seen on stars such as Kirsten Dunst and Alexa Chung.

Paul Costello – For the last 30 year, Costelloe has been at the forefront of Irish and British fashion. His father, hailing from our own fair Limerick, moved the family up to Dublin where Paul grew up. In the late sixties he went to Paris to study before moving to America. Upon his return to Dublin, he set up his eponymous label in 1979, which expanded to London in the 90s. His shows are now standard at London Fashion Week and he has designed the uniforms for companies like Sainsburys, British Airways and the Irish Olympic Team.

J.W. Anderson – A recent designer on the scene, J.W. Anderson hails from Magherafelt in Northern Ireland. Born in 1984, Anderson graduated from London College of Fashion and is now seen as one of Britain’s most popular fashion designers. He made his debut at London Fashion Week in 2007 and once used real insects in his jewellery during a catwalk show.

These are just four of the numerous amazing designers that Ireland has to boast about, making a splash in both the Irish pond and the international ocean. With talent like this, there is never a need not to buy Irish design again!

Keep styling, Em x
