The Fashion Faux Pas of Oscars Past

AS OSCAR fever is still hanging around, fashion lovers like myself are already looking forward to examining and scrutinising what our favourite starlets and leading men will be sporting to top the style stakes next year. But as fantastic as some of the frocks and suits will be on the red carpet, we have to look back on some of the blunder those A-list celebs made back in the day. I don’t know about you all but it gives me a certain sense of satisfaction when the faces we know and love/loathe get it SO wrong!

Geena Davis has never been high up on the list of fashionistas but my goodness, 1992 was definitely not her year. Someone didn’t explain to the poor lass that although it was a special night, it wasn’t her special day and she needed to put the bizarre wedding dress back in the wardrobe. Or better, just burn it.

You know, we complain about what Madonna wears now, I’m a repeat offender of this but back in 1999 she looked even worse. Her Bollywood look mystifies everyone this year and I don’t know whether she looked older or younger than she does now. Thumbs down Madge!

Cher. Babe. Just no. A woman that can take a fabulous dress and make it look awful, Cher decided she was going to wear double denim in 2000. To the Oscars. There are no words for this outfit, just awful!

Probably one of the most memorable Oscar outfits of all time is Bjork in the horrible swan dress. Have you ever seen that scene in White Chicks when they have those awful dresses in the fashion show? Yeah, they were actually made for real people, and Bjork looks…just horrendous!

This outfit is a prime example of ‘just because its designer doesn’t mean you should wear it’. Uma Thurman sporting Christian LaCroix like something out of a pirate movie is just a tad too much for our liking and this was less than ten years ago!

Before Anne Hathaway was a style goddess, she was like all of us, but to be honest, I don’t think many of us would have picked this dress. Satin, flowery and orange – not a great combination and she looks incredibly uncomfortable in it!

So celebrities are just like all of us, no matter how amazing they look now, they will never escape the horrendous pictures of red carpets past. Now to sit back and wait for the next Oscars where we hope the delightful celebrities will have an ounce of fashion sense!

2012 WAS a fantastic year in terms of fashion. We saw many styles come and go throughout the year and unfortunately had to put up with the staying power of others (yes, fake Barbour jackets, I’m talking about you!). The Irish have clung to these styles like a dog to a bone and as soon as you have read this, you’ll notice these items appearing around college like an unofficial uniform!

Lita’s: Jeffrey Campbell brought these gorgeous beauties into our lives and now we can’t get rid of them. At first, they look clumpy but these incredible boots are everywhere now and are the most comfortable heels that anyone can ever buy! If you don’t own a pair of these bad boys, scoot out to the shops for yourself and pick up a pair. I’ve got three pairs of these and the collection is quickly growing, they’re so so comfy and go with everything!

Leather leggings: The leggings trend is one that can be a bit hit and miss. There was the dreaded floral leggings phase that people insisted on doing and of course you still see the odd woman thinking that she can wear those leggings with a very short top. But the leather leggings trend is one that we could get on board with! Half leather trouser, half leggings, how could this combination go wrong? These go with absolutely everything, especially litas!

Dip-Dye: Stemming from someone growing out his or her hair dye, this new ombré trend is now available in a box and is on every fashionista around the world at the moment. For only a few euros, well about 15, you can look like Drew Barrymore or Sophia Bush…providing you want to, of course! I’ve just done this myself and I love the way it adapts to your hairs natural base colour!

Military: 2012 was the year that every person looked like they had joined the army but with a twist. Military print is everywhere, mixed with leather, floral and sequins in an urban, modern twist. Best worn in jacket form with a gorgeous pair of shorts or the aforementioned leather leggings and litas.

Peplum: What self-respecting woman doesn’t have peplum these days? Whether is a skirt or a dress or a top, this style is gorgeous and flattering on just about everyone. A favourite with stars like Kim Kardashian and a huge style in 2012 whether you’re going out or just mooching around during the day, it’s certainly a trend to watch going into the Spring/Summer season in 2013.

Statement Necklaces: Statement necklaces have always been associated with an older generation but in 2012, bloggers went crazy over the statement necklace trend. Best with a plain dress or nice top, these statement necklaces are huge and can be bought anywhere from Penneys to Topshop depending on what you want to spend.

Make sure you keep a look out for these trends; they’ll be sticking around long into the New Year and your spring wardrobe won’t be complete without these!

It’s just a quick post tonight, I wanted to post Sunday but with all the birthday celebrations the last few days its been manic. My mum threw a little surprise party for me last night and I had a really great night, loads of wine and champagne flowing and my cake was unbelievable…so me! It had my laptop, an icing me, Vogue, my new Cambridge Satchel and Chanel on it! I got Brian’s old phone last week and I’ve been messing about with Instagram ever since so I have a few photos to put up of my 21st birthday celebrations up here before the real celebrations at the weekend with all my mates! Looking forward to getting my MacBook in the next week or two as well, my birthday present to me that I’ve been wanting for a long time so I can’t wait! If anyone is wondering, that’s my Jones and Jones dress from Topshop and my spiky gold necklace from H&M that I’m sporting in the photos, no Lookbook photos I’m afraid, there was too much wine to be had!

I’m hoping to get up a few outfit posts up over the next couple of weeks, I finally have access to my wardrobe again being back at home so I need to make the most of it! I’m finally taking a breath to sit down and watch ‘Styled to Rock’, Rihanna’s new designer reality show. Its like the British version of ‘Project Runway’ and I get the feeling its going to be fantastic and complete guilty pleasure viewing! Rihanna, Henry Holland and singers like Cheryl Cole and Katy Perry, these designers are going to have to work seriously hard to impress and I’ll be watching it avidly every week as well as BINTM! I haven’t decided who I like and want to win but I’ll get back to you on that!

I’m organising my life right now cos I’m about to move out of home, never to move back in! I’ve got one more year left of college and will be moving in with my boyfriend straight after so the next couple of weeks after I get back from Milan will be consumed with clearing out my room and sorting out my wardrobe! Shoes were on the agenda and for the first time in a long time, I saw all my shoes today and realised I have a shoe addiction! How bad!

I’m glad to be settled down for a couple of days to relax and hopefully do some writing. I’m going to post up photos of my holiday outfits and would love to hear your opinions on how you think i should be styling on the streets of Milan! Hoping I can convince Brian to take some outfit posts for me!

I should head to bed, I’m hoping to get the September issue of US Vogue tomorrow  and I’ll need all my energy for that. Hoping to update tomorrow if I can so until then,

I know it’s not a Sunday but this is the first time in a while I’ve been able to sit down on my own and think about things to write about! Its been a busy but lazy week I suppose you could say. Brian moved into his new flat the day before I got back to Ireland so I’ve been cleaning like a mad woman since I got here since he’s at work and I’ve got nothing else to be doing while I’m here. We went out at the weekend, the first time I’ve been in a nightclub in a year so that was pretty awesome and since then I’ve just been pottering around, trying to get things sorted for college and my new flat as well as the rest of my busy life for the rest of August!

I’m so psyched to get back to some normality in the next few days and getting my life sorted for university in September is making me excited for the year ahead: my last year as a student!  I’m feeling very nostalgic the last few days, thinking of where the last three years could have gone cos I really haven’t felt it go past! I’m 21 in less than a week so it’s not helping the case that I’m feeling old! I’ve been thinking about the future a lot and what it has in store for me and how my plans have changed so dramatically over the last couple of months. My one constant at the moment is this blog and I’m determined to keep it going and make it even more successful than its been already. So that brings me swiftly around to this weeks Scrumptious Sunday Seven and the things that I am looking at, coveting or just very subtly hinting for my birthday!

1. The Bambi jumper. When we were in Amsterdam, I spotted the cutest and most comfortable looking jumper ever in H&M. It was long (probably normal on normal sized people!), was a russet/maroon kind of colour and had a picture of Bambi at the front. We swooned over it for about 10 minutes but I didn’t have the 25 euro it cost so I had to leave it behind. I’ve looked on the H&M websites, both UK and Dutch and can’t find it on there so I’m just hoping that this jumper can be found in Belfast when I go up next week, can anyone put my mind at ease by telling me they’ve seen one!

2. UL. I can’t wait to get back to university in September and being able to go back to University of Limerick is so exciting to me! I love the people, the campus and especially the fact that it’s so beautifully laid out. I think because I haven’t been back for a year, I’m more excited than usual and this is the first year I’ll be an editor on the campus and get to meet all my writers! It was hard being away last year when I was still doing so much work for the uni so I’m psyched to get back!

3. My article in the new issue of Linger Magazine. I was really excited with this issue and my article also includes photos of my outfit on me…my modelling career has therefore begun :P I love writing for Linger magazine and I’ve included a screenshot of my article and photos so I hope you enjoy it too!

4. My new-found obsession with Rita Ora. Her style is completely different to mine and I would never wear most of the stuff that she does but she pulls her style off with such ease and confidence, I really admire her. Plus the girl can really sing and she rocks that red lipstick like nobody’s business!

5. I’ve been enjoying cooking so much since I’ve been back home, there is nothing like a month of eating out to make you appreciate a home-cooked meal! I’ve been experimenting a bit with things and have found the greatest lunch of all time! I first had this on the train from Budapest to Vienna and was dying to try it ever since and I’ve been eating it every day this week: ciabatta with cheese (supposed to be Emmental but I’ve been using Cheddar) rocket and fresh tomato.

6. This year’s Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model has been a mixed bag over the last few weeks. I’m a complete addict but this has been disappointing me so far. The last 2 episodes have been above par and as usual, I have my favourites to win. As well as everyone else, I’m vying for Roxy to win, or at least to be in the final. Her hair did look horrendous at the makeover but she is working that orange hair now. My other favourite is Lisa, the Irish girl who got all her locks chopped off into a pixie cut and she is all the better for it, STUNNING!

7. And as usual some fun fashion photography. I’m by the sea this week so you may see some nautical photos thrown in here as well as some birthday themed ones along with the normal ones!

I hope everybody has a great week, its only 3 days until the weekend! I’ll be writing again before my birthday so people can feel free to cheer me up about being old, that would be awesome, all hugs and bottles of champagne accepted! I’ve touched down in London, England and I’ll tell you, I’ve never been so delighted to see home. Anyone planning to go inter-railing, make sure you don’t get stressed easily cos I think my nerves are shot! It was an amazing experience though and as I build up my new section ‘Dora and Ellen’s Inter-railing Guide’, I’ll be able to impart my extensive knowledge (in my opinion) of the things to do and not to, best cities to go to and the items you NEED to remember that we may have forgotten (bug spray!).

Olympic-mania is in over-drive here and I love it! I’ve watched so many events and I can’t STAND sports! I’m not looking forward to taking the tube from South London to North London tomorrow though….or going through the airport! But in two days I’m going back to live with Brian for a while which I can’t wait for! Bring on the crazy month of August!

1. Team GB. The uniforms are absolutely fab, well done Stella McCartney! With all the controversy coming from the US contingent’s uniforms, everyone has kept relatively quiet about the British teams but the mixture of the white and gold, instead of just keeping it red, white and blue was inspired and the team look fantastic!

2. MY BIRTHDAY!! I’m so excited about my birthday this year, I’m turning the big 2-1! I know it’s not for another 2 weeks, August 13th to be exact but I’m very excited making plans for my own little festival in my mates house! Drinks, food and my mates, can’t wait! I’m dying to know what my presents are and no-one will tell me but I’m saving up for a Macbook so all donation welcome, and Brian has bought my a Cambridge Leather Satchel bag, which I’m so excited about. I’ve already done a segment on the satchels and wanted one for ages so I’m extremely lucky! All I have to do is find an awesome Macbook case!

3. So before I left for London, we did a small bit of a shop in Amsterdam! I know I’d said I’d wait till London, but due to family circumstances the shopping trip had to be put off so I treated myself! I saw this amazing floral peplum top in H&M in Berlin and when I saw it in Amsterdam I HAD to get it. I was a bit apprehensive at the start but when I tried it on, it fit like a dream and I’m delighted with it, can’t wait for an occasion to wear it! In the spirit of this I’m professing my love for peplum tops, every curvy girls best friend!

4. My Kindle has been my lifesaver for the past month so I’m going to have to sing its praises. If you haven’t got one, GET ONE! I’m crazy about books, always have been and I love the feel of a book in my hand. For this reason I wasn’t sure about the concept and I have been called up about it, but for my crazy travelling lifestyle, a Kindle was the best thing invented for a person like me and having served me well for a month and letting me read about 10 books over the month, I know worship it. What do you think of yours?!

5. Litas litas litas. I love them so so much and I’m finally getting my hands on mine tomorrow. Now, no-one does litas like Jeffrey Campbell and I’m not going to go on, I’m just going to show you my favourites! 7. And last but not least, some lovely pictures to brighten up my week as well as yours. I’ve pulled a mixture out of everywhere, a real confusion, kinda like my brain at the moment trying to do and think of everything at once so these images really capture me this week!

I hope everyone has a great week, I’ve just found out I’m going to the Stratford Centre in London tomorrow so I’ll get my trip to Victoria’s Secret after all! An English Rose in Paris

So today brought about the last day of my photo set for Linger magazine. I’ve got all the looks I want to write about covered for all cities and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. Its really inspired me to out up more Lookbook posts so hopefully I’ll get a few more up in London when I FINALLY get some of my my wardrobe back and then in Galway if my lovely boyfriend would be so kind!

So if you haven’t guessed already, this is the British segment of the photo set!! I tried to mix a few different cultural styles out of what I had in my suitcase and I like to think I did alright with a very small selection of clothes! Of course I had to use my houndstooth blazer and my bowler hat for the proper Brit look. Taking them at the Eiffel Tower probably wasn’t the most English thing to do but deadlines are deadlines! Amateur Parisian: New Lookbook Post

Such a crazy day in Paris and we never got to see any of the sights! We went to the station to put our backpacks in lockers and run to get our tickets to Luxembourg on Sunday and ended up waiting in a queue for three hours to get them. By the time we were finished and dropped our bags  to the hotel, there was hardly point going back in so we’ve gone ANOTHER day in Paris without seeing anything! I can see the Eiffel Tower from my hotel window though.

Tomorrow is another day however and as its Bastille Day the city will be so buzzing, I’m really excited!  We’re going to see all the tourist sights and hopefully see the fireworks! It was Parisian style day for my article so I dressed up in my concept of a Parisian outfit (from what I have in my backpack) and took some photos for the Linger article. I notice a lot of Parisians either purposefully or subconsciously wear a lot of navy, white and red without shoving their flag in your face. I love that concept of patriotism through fashion and that’s what makes  France so different from any other country style-wise in my opinion.

I’ll be updating tomorrow with my British concept which I CAN’T wait for, you all know how much I love British fashion and I can’t wait to finally wear my gold spikey necklace! So keep an eye out and until then…

Monte Carlo

Between Milan and Paris, we got to squeeze in the tiniest visit to Monte Carlo for a couple of hours (it was on the way, I swear).  We walked around for a little while before the sun got too bright and we collapsed under our backpacks so I decided to get a few Lookbook pictures which you can hype HERE! I’m doing an article on the style differences between different European countries and this outfit suited Monte Carlo to a tee! We’re in Paris at the moment so we’ll be taking some more shots for the magazine article, keep your eyes peeled for some Lookbook entries! Until then…

Apologies for not posting in the last two weeks, our inter-railing trip has also turned into the quest for decent wifi….a.k.a., there is none and I haven’t been able to check my emails, let alone write a post! I’ve got so much news and so little at the same time. We’ve been to Vienna, Oswiecim, Krakow, Prague, Munich, Venice, Rome and Florence in the last eight days and its only now that I’m sitting down and taking a breather. Its 35 degrees here, I’m covered in insect bites and have a sunburnt foot…who said travelling wasn’t fun! The fashion over here in these different countries are unbelievable, even if you’re going to different cities in Italy, the style changes so dramatically. We’re going to Milan tomorrow and I’m SO excited to see what the streets bring to me style-wise! I’ll also be doing research for my next article for Linger on the differences in European street styles so Milan and Paris will certainly be getting a mention! Speaking of writing for Linger, my first article is up in the current issue HERE so anyone with a subscription can read it! Anyone who can’t, I’ll do my best to get a screenshot or a transcript for you! So that’s enough of that, it looks like I have quite a few posts to get up tonight so we’ll get on with the Scrumptious Sunday Seven for this sweltering week!

1. Vintage! We were in this fantastic little vintage shop in Prague that housed the designers we all know and love, like Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton. We found it walking up a little side street and it was just amazing to go in and be in the presence of these beautiful old Chanel classic suits and 40′s heels. In LOVE!

2. In Rome, we walked down the most amazing and expensive street I have EVER been down (with the exception of Bond Street in London!). It had every designer you’ve ever heard of and some you haven’t and I was in absolute awe at everything there! When I win the lottery or find a load of money somewhere I’ll be coming back. Especially fell in love with these amazing studded biker boots…its my birthday soon…hint hint!

3. Grecian maxi-dresses. I saw a girl wearing one in Krakow and absolutely adored it. I’ve been on the hunt for one ever since, it was so beautiful! I don’t know if I’m too short to wear maxi-dresses or not but a girl can dream!

4. I’ve bought some yellow nail polish in Budapest and I’m loving it on my travels. It’s a proper bright yellow and makes any outfit look more fun. I can’t wear yellow as a colour because I’m so pale but its fun being able to wear it and have it suit me! Neon is incredibly in this season so even if I do it through my nails, I’m happy!

5. Stripes. Taken to the extreme. This isn’t exactly favourite fashion but this trio really made me smile up by the Colosseum when we were in Rome. Stripes are very in at all times, just fluctuating between stripe size. This lot aren’t exactly down with the kids but this will brighten up your day! Remind you of anyone?

6. Graffiti. It’s everywhere over here and I’m loving it. I’m one of these people who loves graffiti and sees it as an art form…as long as its good of course! Europe has graffiti everywhere and it really struck me how creative it was to put it on the metro trains! Reminds me of the Underground in London or the subway in New York.

7. And lastly, some travel related fashion photography, I love all these photos, I wish I looked this chic travelling but unfortunately, its hard to look fashionable when you have a crazy big backpack on your back, but I can just not look in the mirror and pretend I’m Kate Moss! These shots are beautiful and I’m hoping to make some of my own in the next couple of weeks!
